Ripken had a good point... How come the call is different at home plate?

What do you mean, "how come the call is different"? You mean, why don't they squeeze a guy to 2d? rolleyes.gif

I'm torn on the decision. I presume they figured with a 2-0 count he'd be coming in with a strike for sure, but when he threw the curve low the batter just couldn't get to it.

I probably wouldn't have squeezed but had the runner going on contact to try scoring him on a ground ball.

I personally wouldn't have done it, but i can't really fault scococscoscia for doing so. You've got a guy at the plate who had 9 bunt hits and 9 sac bunts on the season, a guy with some speed on 3rd, and a batters count where you know the pitch is coming in the zone. It was just a hell of a pitch made. 9/10 times willitis gets the bunt down and the run scores. This just happened to be the single time an excellent pitch was made and he missed the bunt.

I am sorry, let me clarify biggrin.gif ... I meant the call about dropping the ball. Yes, the runner got tagged and yes the ball came out after the tag when the glove hit the ground... If that was the runner bulling over the catcher at home, even if the catcher's hand/mitt flies back, hits the ground and the ball comes out... Most of the time, the runner is safe and the run counts. Why not at third, second, or first?

And yes, KD... I probably would have elected for the run-on contact type of play rather than the squeeze!

I think Soscia's call was fine. They've played that way all year, and for 5 years. Just poor execution from a team who executes the majority of the time.

I think the call at third was wrong. If you have to dive to tag a guy, you should have to hold the ball as the dive-and-roll is completed. And you're right...At home plate, it is often ruled that the ground can cause a fumble. Strange discrepency.

True with the first part... I am not sure I would have had the guts in that situation.

The second part... That was my exact thinking. It was the tag which caused his mitt to hit the ground... Hehas got to hold on! Same thing with a catch on a flyball... One has got to come up with the ball in the end. Baseball you need to hold on... This isn't a "timed" (clock) game.

I hate the Halos as much as the Faux Sox... I do think the Angels got jobbed.
