That Guy
Hey, I'm a current student at SUNY Geneseo and a Buffalo expatriate. I used to be registered here as "Boondock Fan" but that ID doesn't seem to work anymore.

Welcome back. I went to Geneseo. I was there the exact years that the Bills were in those super bowls. Geneseo is an awesome place. I had a great time there. Is the Idol Hour still there?

Yes it is, as well as the In Between (I know an alum who asked me about that). And yes, it is still a town rife with underage drinking.

There's a nice sportsbar with 25 cent wings on sundays (and a kickass fish fry on friday) and over a half dozen tv's which go full force on sunday. A bunch of expatriates from various areas (mostly Jets, Giants and Bills) and various places. In short, a nice little Mecca to hang out in.

The Statesman or is it that place up Center Street?

When I was there ('92-'96), we went to the place up Center to watch even the blacked out games b/c they had the "big dish" (well before DirecTV days... totally forgot about that until just now.

It's a small place on Bank Street called "The Vital Spot".

Not sure why I didn't even consider that. I guess I was thrown by the fish fry. They did used to bust out garbage plates as the Blue Plate Special once or twice a week, which was nice. Who doesn't love a plate full of garbage?

Garbage plates...yummmm.

Idle Hour/Center St.
Vital Spot/Bank St.
In-Between/ Bank-School Streets
The Statesmen (sic)/Court St.

Geneseo (and a few tiny villages nearby), is a hotbed of long-time, steady Bills fanaticism. I know over 30 of us who venture to the games every Sunday...have for years. GO BILLS!!

Yes, and those are just four of the bars within a three minute walk from the center of campus. Gotta love it.

It really is a great place to be, and to be honest, there really is nothing else to do on a Sunday morning BUT be obsessed with the Bills, so that fuels my fanatcism just fine.

Oh believe me, I'm familiar with those places. But there was a place WAY up Center Street with a "big dish" that carried the blacked out games back in the day... Geneseo Tavern, maybe? It was a total townie bar and they looked at you like you had 3 heads if you walked in looking like a student.
mead107
Any good wine bars ?
CJPearl2
I was there from 94-98. Love Geneseo, miss that place a lot.

Brad, it was the Geneseo Tavern. It was that place across from the gas station near the corner of Center and the main strip of stores, etc (Route 20a?).

Welcome. "That Guy".

My grandmother graduated from "Geneseo Normal School" in 1917 and taught in a one room schoolhouse in Springwater. Think of this - she was a college graduate but could not vote!

My brother went there during 'Nam and got his degree. I went there for a few years, majoring in Euchre and beer. thumbsup.gif Geneseo was named in a Playboy poll about that time as being one of the top "drinking" schools.

I dropped out and became a "road scholar" (sic), and spent a few years hitchhiking and backpacking around NY/NJ/PA and New England - picking up jobs here and there when I needed food. Years later Babyrock went there and got her teaching degree. I gave her my Grandmother's diploma from 1917 in a frame for her dorm room. Her friends were amazed.

Gentleman Jim's was my favorite hangout. It is now the student bookstore.

Buzzo's is still there, right? Al Bruno used to lead the homecoming parade, playing his trumpet and wearing a bathrobe. I went down a few years back and got a new guitar case. I bought my guitar there over 35 years ago and the case finally wore out! "Buzzo" and I got bullshitting about the "old days".

The Genesee Valley is a wonderful place!

Great thread. I was enrolled at SUNY Geneseo for a semester (fall '85), got thrown out and then just hung around for two years. Lived in a fire-trap slum hole down on Lower Court. Used to hang out at the Statesman, Vital, and mostly the Idle. At the Idle they'd let you buy a keg at last call back then. One of the last bars that would play vinyl records on request. One thing about people that went to that school for any amount of time is they've all got that look in their eyes that says, "Yeah, I have seen some pretty wild sh*t." There's not much point in relating any stories to anybody who didn't go there because they'd think you were making them up.

Was there from 4 years. I know exactly what you mean.

Godbless that place.

I happen to love it myself

That COULD be why I'm going there, when I could have had a higher GPA by going somewhere else.

You'll be fine. I partyed my ass off, was in a fraternity, and I got into law school and now I am a successful lawyer in California.

My primary Buzzo memory is that he played the trumpet on Main Street just after the O.J. verdict was announced.
