Hoosier Daddy? quietly make trade to help defense

Even though most of the league was on the bye this week, Indianapolis GM Bill Polian wasn't. He took the off the field time to make a trade with the Cleveland Steamers. The Hoosier Daddy? acquired CB Asante Samuel, DE Paul Spicer and LB Clint Ingram from Cleveland. The Steamers acquired DE/DT Richard Seymour, CB Ken Lucas and LB Leon Williams in return. The teams also exchanged 2009 draft picks, Cleveland getting Indy's first round pick and Indy acquiring a 4th Round pick. The Daddy? needed help at corner. Seymour and Williams were expendable because of the team's move from the 4-3 to the 3-4 as its primary defense.
Lucas had lead Indy in interceptions with two but Samuel has just as many but deemed to be a much better cover corner. When approached for comment HC Jim Mora Sr said, "Obviously, we've had a need in the secondary for some time. We haven't had a lot of consistency at the position." These comments come from the fact the Hoosier Daddy's defense ranks 20th in passing yards per game and has a seemingly inability to avoid big plays in the passing game that have lead to recent losses to Ottawa and Springfield. Yet aside from Samuel the team feels they got a starter in Paul Spicer. It's also a home coming for the Indianapolis native. As the veteran offers up some size and looks strong in run support and a little more pass rush then the vacated Seymour who might be a better presence but never seemingly was comfortable playing DE in the team's new 4-3 scheme. Meanwhile Ingram looks like he'll serve primarily as a backup.
Cleveland made the trade as they were looking to get younger and that they did with Leon Williams and the high pick acquired in the trade. When asked to comment Steamers CEO JP's Landscaper said "this is a good start with having two 1st round rookie picks".
