There were some pretty good ones this week.

Springfield used a 14 point barrage late in the game to overcome a very tough Indianapolis team and remain undefeated. Congrats to the Isotopes, who are also the league's #1 team in the power rankings.

Seattle survived a very strong test this week, beating division rival Tempe to increase their division lead to 2 games. Things could be heating up in that division, as Colorado seems to be coming on strong too after a rough beginning.

Speaking of defense, the league's top ranked defensive team, Toronto, kept it going w/ a win over division rival Ottawa. I gotta believe Ottawa is going to get some wins here soon. This team is too good to stay down like this. Do I sense an Ottawa rally here? We'll see.

Louisiana looked sharp in beating New Orleans this week, keeping their slim lead in the divison over Texas (1 game) but widening their lead over the Hand Grenades w/ the win (now up 2 games on 'Nawlins). Welcome back, Fred Taylor! When he's on, Louisiana is as good a team as there is in this league.

After the bye week, the fun begins for the Erie Assassins. Yeah we're 5-0, but we face a division foe that is also 5-0 in the Pittsburgh River Rats, a team w/ the 3rd ranked offense in the league and a tough, tenacious defense. There are only three other teams that are still undefeated now: Springfield @ 4-0 and both Philadelphia and the Erie Slayers @ 5-0. Wanna guess what these teams all have in common? Yep, they are ALL on the schedule for the Assassins. Oh, and we also have a road game @ 4-1 and 5th ranked Louisiana. Looks like playtime is over for the Assassins and it's time to go to work. The bye week couldn't have come along @ a better time.

There were quite a few noticeable offensive stars this week. A few who stood out: Taylor (143 yards in Louisiana's win), Steers QB Jay Cutler (300 passing yards, 4 TDs), and Assassins QB Jon Kitna (373 yards, 3 TDs).

Defensively, Pittsburgh's Shawne Merriman (8 tackles, 3 sacks) and the Steers' Trent Cole (6 tackles, 3 sacks) were standouts as well.

Special teams? Believe it or not, it wasn't the Devin Hester show this week. Vegas' Ellis Hobbs had over 200 kick return yards and took one to the house this week.

There were a few big injuries this week. Cleveland's Dwight Freeney is out 6 weeks w/ a back injury while knee injuries will sideline Brooklyn WR Dwayne Jarrett and Assassins CB Carlos Rogers for 8 weeks.

Next week will be a bye week for nearly all of the teams in the league. The only games on the schedule will be Springfield travelling to the desert to take on the Tempe Sand Devils while the Maryland Crabs will continue to pursue their first win by hosting the Green Bay Water Boys.
The Jokeman
Kudos to Springfield to a well fought out game. We liked our chances late as felt if we were the last team with the ball we'd be the last team to score. Unfortunately Garrard and Berrian who had been hot all day couldn't hook up late in the game on two occasions. A missed field goal ultimately cost us the chance to tie the game. We knew Springfield was going to be a formidable foe and that they were. Yet we were moderately surprised how well they were able to contain our running game as OC Steve Walsh felt it was a match up that could of been exploited. That said we're looking to make some improvements and they could be forthcoming pending approval.

The Curmudgeons are having a decent season so far, but I can't really shake the feeling that at any moment things could just fall apart completely. We've been too turnover prone and haven't seen the success we expected in the passing game.
