Steers have panties in a knot.
After the game ended last week, coach Dodge has some harsh words for his football team, even though they only lost by two points to perhaps the best team in the conference. "The whole team kept whining about Hester all game. 'Coach, We can't stop him' or 'Coach, please put someone else in, I'm getting embarrassed,'" Cocah Dodge said. "If our football team would have quit whining about the first Hester TD, we could have won the game. Instead, they had their panties in a knot, and gave up another one."
Owner/General Manager BlueFire wasn't very happy about the comments. In another unusual turn, he expressed serious doubt about the coach's decision, second-guessing him publicly. "I'm highly disappointed in Coach Dodge's comments. We played one of the best teams in the conference, and against the best returner in the league. Maybe if he spent his time figuring out how to stop the other team instead of berating our own, we would have won."
In any event, both Coach Dodge and Mr. Fire agree that this incident is behind them. In pointing out the positives of this week's game, one needs to go no further than Quarterback Jay Cutler, who recovered from bad play early on to lead them on an almost game-tying drive. The Steers also saw Reggie Wayne, Frank Gore, Keary Colbert, and Leon Washington also have solid games. This bodes well for the offense, which needs to continue playing well. On the defensive side of the ball, the play of the defensive ends was fantastic, and new comers Brooking and Huff both made their impacts felt.
Looking ahead to Week 2, the Steers get their first home game of the year, hosting Colorado. Coach Dodge in his weekly press conference indicated that the Steers are the most concerned with stopping Colorado's passing game. "After getting beat fairly badly through the air last week, we're going to have another test on our hands against Colorado," he said. "They love to pass, and the combination of Eli to Santonio is tough to stop. If you can slow both Eli and Santonio, though, you have a good chance of shutting down their offense." Still, Coach Dodge wasn't optimistic given last week's performance, "We need to improve rapidly this week, which is tough to do after losing one of your starting corners to an injury, like what happened to Aaron [Ross]. It will be a tough test for us."
