I had three sports heroes growing up. My other two were OJ (hero status since revoked) and Thurman Munson. But Bobby Murcer was always #1 to me when I was a kid. I cried when the Yankees traded him. I couldn't understand why they'd do that.
As I grew up and realized sports heroes aren't real heroes, I still always held a special place for Murcer. Thurman was gone and my imagined version of OJ had died too, but Bobby not only turned out to be a decent guy, but I got to see and hear him on Yankee broadcasts. It was nice to have at least one sports hero who turned out to resemble (at least a little) what a real hero is like. He battled cancer and kept a positive attitude, expressing appreciation for life. RIP Bobby and thanks for the memories.
Really could not have said it any better. Bobby was a joy to listen to on Yankees broadcasts, in this era of guys who have massive egos and love negativity, Bobby was a breath of fresh air that I wish was more prevalent in today's sports world. Most deaths do not effect me that much, but hearing about Bobby got me misty eyed.
RIP Bobby
