Full Version: Reconfiguring my LAN

So, i am simply copying and pasting the thread I started at broadbandreports.com, but they're always a little slow on the respond at the linksys forum, so I will repost it here for our networking gurus. I'm about 99.999% sure that I am correct in my assessment, but here we go anyways:

Currently, I have a wrt54gs v.5 with the ddwrt micro v24 on it, as my router. Rather than "upgrade" to a lower version for more ram, thus allowing me to run the vpn version of ddwrt, I stumbled upon a linksys rv082 router. Here is a simple diagram of what I currently have running

LAN/WLAN Devices

Now that I have this new router, I have mirrored the dhcp settings, static ip addresses, and basic settings from my current setup to the new router, but I haven't plugged it in yet. I want to reconfigure my WRT54GS into an access point. To do that, I need to change it from a gateway to a router in advanced settings, disable wan connection type, change the wrt54gs ip address so that it matches the new ip address i gave it in the rv082, and change it from dhcp server to dhcp forwarder, and input the rv082 ip address in the box. Then, i'd release the WAN ip address, unplug everything for an hour or so, so that my ISP clears my wrt54gs mac address, then plug everything in as follows:

Cable Modem

RV082

WRT54gs, LAN devices, etc.

Does this procedure sound about right? I'm just a little iffy on that dhcp forwarder thing, cause in the older version of ddwrt, it was either "dhcp server" or "disabled". I'm assuming that it reads just like what it will do, forward dhcp information to the ip address that i input (which would be the IP address of the rv082).

If this is correct, you'll be hearing from me in the next few days so i can actually set up the vpn, which i have absolutely no clue about what to do! Thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds about right to me.

What VPN connection are you trying to make that you're going through all of this work for?

I got a NAS about a month ago that also can be used as an ftp server. Basically, I need a VPN so i can securely connect myself and my family members to my network for picture sharing and copying. The RV082 is a little bit of overkill if i were to actually buy it. It was a gift from my father, who didn't need a vpn router anymore. And, also, since I'm typing this message, i've obviously got my internet back in its new configuration.

That's cool. You just need to consider that your upload speeds from your ISP won't be very fast -- so family members trying to download from you will find it slow.

I'ven ever setup a VPN before (used a client, but that's it), but it'd be a fun project to try. smile.gif

I built a NAS server a couple of weeks ago -- built a new PC and installed FreeNAS on it -- it's very cool and I now have 1.2TB (soon to be ~3TB) of storage at home... Now to get some data to fill it up with laugh.gif

I had my ftp site open before i had the vpn just to test it out with my dad, and to recover some of my lost pictures from my hard drive crash. It was pretty slow, but not THAT slow. It's not going to be public or anything, so i'm not too worried about pleasing anyone. I just want a secure method to transfer pictures from buffalo or washington (where my sister lives) to NC and back again. I've gotta set up a gateway-to-client vpn. After that's done, it will generate a certificate that I can send off via e-mail to the people who need access and want to set up their own connection through windows. There's also a linksys client that I think i can attach the certificate to so that it will auto install on whoever wants it.

A real cool thing about this router though is it's dual wan ports. You can set it up to auto negotiate, or have certain ports and programs go through one wan port or the other, or in my case, you can simply turn off the wan2 port. The WAN2 port can also be a dmz wan port. Now i'm itching to get a 2nd isp! haha

As for my NAS, i bought two 500gb hard drives and have them set up in a raid1 configuration, but the actual box has no max, so i'll probably get two 1tb hard drives sooner than later.
