Full Version: Pitchers running the bases

Is this pathetic or what? I realize the AL doesn't require their pitchers to hit or run. But the excuses pouring in after Wang's injury just make pitchers sound pathetic. They make mega-millions to play a game once every five days, and they complain when they have to run?

This is my personal favorite quote, from Mike Mussina:

"We don't hit, we don't run the bases," Mussina said. "You get four or five at-bats a year at most, and if you happen to get on base once or twice, you never know. We run in straight lines most of the time. Turning corners, you just don't do that."

Unbelievable.

At least the Yanks pitchers haven't had to worry about any postseason baserunning in a few years....

What about when they have to run over and cover first? Or when they have to run behind the catcher at home to back up on a play at the plate.

Ridiculous.

They should just get rid of the DH. I think the game is way more entertaining when the pitchers bat and run. All this complaining about Wang is ridiculous. Stuff happens, move on. Mussina will complain about not getting enough banana slices in his cornflakes. Signed, a Yankees fan- really.

There's thousands of baseball leagues all over this world and the only one using that stupid DH rule is the AL and the AL pitchers want us to pity them for playing a few interleague games a year?!!

Pitchers ARE SUPPOSED to bat! This is how this game is supposed to be played!!

A few weeks ago went to see a spanish league elite game in Pamplona. They had that huge venezuelian cernterfielder. First AB HR, second one intentional BB, third one HR, 4th one one more intentional BB, 5th AB fly finishing just two feet from the outfield fence. Go down the stands to see some fans, telling them he's one hell of a player. The guy answers: "you should have come yesterday, he pitched 6 innings and won the game!"...

On a side note, I love the emergence of Hank Steinbrenner as "the next George." Just when George's health forced him to slip out of the limelight, stop making asinine comments and inserting himself into the player personnel moves, Hank steps up and carries the torch and maintains the family's reputation.

Sorry, but since Hank is the biggest whiner about this pitchers running the bases "controversy" my comment is completely appropriate right here. If it had been a general observation about Hank's general jackassery then I would have gone into the Red $ox-Yank$ thread, but it's in direct response to the issue at hand and Hank's overreaction. dry.gif

"My only message is simple. The National League needs to join the 21st century," Steinbrenner said in Tampa, Fla. "They need to grow up and join the 21st century.

"Am I (mad) about it? Yes," Steinbrenner added. "I've got my pitchers running the bases, and one of them gets hurt. He's going to be out. I don't like that, and it's about time they address it. That was a rule from the 1800s."

Making a rare appearance on the bases at an NL park, Wang pulled up rounding third and hobbled home on Derek Jeter's single. Wang doubled over after scoring, pointed toward his right foot and was helped off the field.

"This is always a concern of American League teams when their pitchers have to run the bases and they're not used to doing it," Steinbrenner said. "It's not just us. It's everybody. It probably should be a concern for National League owners, general managers and managers when their pitchers run the bases. Pitchers have enough to do without having to do that."

Its just part of a life-long question...to DH or not to DH.

I myself am undecided. I like the stategery that is required when pitchers hit. Sacrifice bunts, double switches, etc. But at the same time, pitchers are not hitters...and it takes away something from the game when they have to hit. Its like when you are forced to have a girl on your softball team. TYPICALLY they are the weakest and a sure out. It takes something away from the game...

...that said...I like it the way it is. Since I am personally undecided, keep it the way it is. But this interleague thing is a joke. Lets get rid of interleague play, go back to only division play.

Both leagues need to adopt the same rules. I think no DH makes managing a whole lot more interesting.

Boy, I really want to hear from some of those people who don't consider golfers to be athletes, but think that pitchers should be excused from running the bases.

From Jayson Stark's Rumblings column:

And furthermore …
Memo to Hank Steinbrenner: You know how many American League pitchers besides Chien-Ming Wang have landed on the disabled list because they suffered an interleague-play injury while running the bases in the past five seasons? How about none, according to Baseball Prospectus' Will Carroll. So it's time for Hank to head for the dictionary and study the definition of "freak injury," because that's what this was.
