Since AVG is going to stop providing updates soon, unless you buy it, I am looking for a free alternative.

I had Norton 2006, but made the mistake of getting Vista with my laptop and it is not supported. Vista's compatibility solution is a link to purchase Norton 2007 censored.gif

I use http://www.free-av.com/
"Personal" free addition is valid to 11/30/2008.
It originally was good to May 2008 but when May came around it auto renewed.
It requires you to update version every three days but other than a popup when it updates (hence why I do it manually) no issues.

you got a link to that?

I know they're cutting off updates for version 7.5 but I haven't had any problems with version 8 (free version)

I dl'd AVG 8 today - free version. I have yet to install it, though. It was 45 Mb, so what little that I read about it saying it's bloated and assuming and pushy might be true. I hope it's not one of these "don't worry - trust us - we know what is right for you" things. Dunno yet.

avast is a great program. I switched from avg a few years ago and haven't looked back.

What was happening is that every time AVG ran, it gave me a pop-up notice the 7.5 support (updates) was ending 5/31, and a link to purchase version 8. I incorrectly thought that meant AVG was no longer available free.

I will go to the AVG page and download the freeware. Is it trial software or free for the basic A/V? It (along with Firefox and some common sense), has served me well so far.

I will also check out Avast.

thx

Personally i like avast. It's a more compact program that doesn't seem to use as much memory resources as avg. It also updates every 4 hours, instead of avg's once a day update. The tradeoff is that it's a little complex to set up initially compared to avg.

FWIW, AVG 7.5 Free is still up-dating. I thought they were going to halt the 7.5 updates on Sat. May 31st...
