Full Version: Any of you guys follow college baseball?

College WS is set to begin next weekend, and i want to know if any of you guys follow the game. I go to a ton of FSU games every year, and the baseball is top notch. (of course, i can watch baseball at any level)

If you get a chance, keep an eye (both now and in the future) on FSU's Buster Posey. The kid is an absolute beast and was the ACC player of the year. He's been both catching and closing for FSU. Kid hit .471-19-71 this season, and notched half a dozen saves. He also had a game where he played all 9 positions.

I'm not sure where he projects on the majors. He's a hell of a catcher, both offensive and defensive, but can also hit 93-95mph on the gun. If you've never seen any significant amount of college ball, i highly recommend it, for the same reasons college hockey kicks ass.

EDIT: Holy sh--. Watching the ACC tourney, and the radar gun picked up Posey's pop-up pick off throw from the plate to first. It registered at 80mph.

Ramius, I was reading in ESPN Mag that Buster is projected to go #1 overall to Tampa Bay...man who would have ever thought that is probably a great thing for a guy's career, even last year?

Personal struggles aside, can you imagine how much better Tampa might be right now with Josh Hamilton's .325/13/58 and .964 OPS in the middle of their lineup?

Did you make to Howser to watch us tank the opening game against Bucknell? I had to follow it on the Gametracker but man, sounds like we couldn't hit and the starter who hadn't started in 2 1/2 weeks couldn't get anyone out (who would have thought, huh?)

Gonna be a long off-season if the Crocs knock us out tomorrow... sick.gif

Wow, what a game by Bucknell... I knew they had offense, but a complete game shutout? Against FSU? Didn't see that coming... One of my good friends was on the Bucknell team for his freshman and sophomore year but quit... anyway, I've met and drank with a few of the guys, including tonight's pitcher Matt Wilson, my friend's housemate- a Canadian, btw, and my buddy told me this guy thought he had no chnce against FSU's hitters... Good for him, spectacular performance... Way to go, Bison

I didnt get to the Bucknell game, thank God, but i did get to the gators game on saturday. Good to send those sh-- heads home for the season. After the opener, something just snapped with FSU. After getting shut out by Bucknell, the 'Noles offense has exploded for 58 runs in the last 3 games (17, 24, 17). Posey is making a strong final push to be the #1 overall pick, by smacking 5 HRs so far in the regional, including 4 HRs in the 2 games yesterday.

I am headed to Dick Howser tonight for the winner take all game. Should be a good time.

Yeah it was very relieving to see us get the bats going. I think the Bucknell loss embarrassed them and got them focused - hopefully they can carry that over to tonight.

Looks like Fairel against an unnamed right-handed starter for Tulane, speculation is their ace, Shooter Hunt (sounds like a character in a bad Adam Sandler movie) will take the hill after throwing 99 pitches against UF on Friday.

I miss going to the Regional and Super Regional games at Howser - the night ones, not the all-day-in-the-sun, lose-10-lbs-of-water-weight-and-go-home-sunburned day games.

The massacre is over. After being shutout on friday night, FSU won the final 4 games, scoring a ming boggling 74 runs on 86 hits. 6 of the 8 FSU positional players made the "all-regional" team. Leadoff hitter Tyler Holt batted 14-20 in the regional. Not too shabby.
Bmwolf21
With the way he hit in the last four games, why did Holt hit 9 in the opener against Bucknell? Was Martin sending him a message?

I'm not sure what to think of the Wichita State matchup - are their pitchers really as good as their numbers, or were they padded from playing in a weak (this year) conference? They did beat Ok. State twice in their regional, so I'm not sure what to think...our offense has been on fire but the pitching was a little shaky this weekend.

Holt had really slowed down towards the end of the year. He's only a freshman, and i think some of the good opposition was able to get into his head when he was at the plate. You saw him thinking too much about pitches and counts instead of just hitting the ball. The 1 game demotion in the order wasnt a "message", it was simply a, "here, we're taking some pressure off you for a game so you can just forget everything around you and just hit the ball." looks like it worked.

I dont know too much about wichita st. havent really seen them play. One thing i do know, is that we need our SPs to get back on their respective games. Fairel looked pretty good last night in his limited time, so i think the UF game was a hiccup. The only reason fairel gave up some runs (and i was yelling at mike martin for doing this) was because after he had shut out tulane through 4 innings, there was an hour rain delay. Martin then trotted him back out after the delay to get a few more innings out of him.
Bmwolf21
Yeah I was following the game on the GameTracker and was shocked that Fairel was back out there after a lengthy delay. Seems like 99% of the time if a delay goes longer than 15-20 minutes the starter is gone, so when Fairel was listed as still in the game I was a little surprised.

Good thoughts on Holt, I didn't get to follow the team as much this year as I have in the past, so I didn't realize that he had slowed down in the stretch run. Moving him around probably got him some better pitches to hit and probably took a lot of pressure off him.

Looks like another baking-in-the-sun weekend at Howser - game times are 2 p.m. Friday, noon Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday if necessary. From what I am reading on the FSU message board it seems ESPN still doesn't think too highly of Howser's upgraded lighting system. On the bright side the games are listed on ESPN2 for Friday and Saturday and Sunday's game would be on ESPN if necessary, so maybe I'll finally get to see a couple games...
Bmwolf21
Buster goes 5th overall to San Francisco...SS Tony Delmonico goes in the 6th round (#187) to the Dodgers...FSU signing class of 2009 recruit Tyler Pastornicky goes in the 5th round (159) to Toronto...

i was out fo town this weekend, so i didnt get to see the games live. sad.gif But if i was there, you would have seen me leading the charge to go kick bartman jr's ass. He's been all over the tally news down here. Not a popular guy. I think the noles winning yesterday saved his life.

Yeah he's quite a popular topic on the Warchant message board, complete with screenshots and pics of the incident. Some people won't let it go, even though we won.

Personally I couldn't care less - since we won. I'm more interested in looking ahead to Omaha, and wishing I could go.

LSU is on a tear recently. They could do some damage in Omaha. But they're in a tough draw with UNC.

I knew Paul Mainieri when he was a coach here at Air Force and got to spend some time with him when he was at Notre Dame too. Hes a really great guy and classy coach. I hope for nothing but great things for him, so for at least this year's CWS, I'm taking off the Longhorns hat (sorry bluefire) and donning the purple and gold for Paul's sake.
Bmwolf21
Florida State cannot get a clutch hit with the bases loaded and Villaneuva is handing out way too many free passes today...who would have thought that physically knocking out their starter would bite us in the butt?
CajunBillsBacker
Tough loss tonight to UNC, but i'm so proud of this team. It felt friggin great to see us in Omaha again. Can't wait till next season!
