What are the numbers that lead you to say you have high blood pressure? What does "has went up some" mean?

tThat's higher than normal, but not "real high".

Me - old man - has about 140 without my mild medication. My lower #, the diastole is less than 80. That's good - the pipes have flexibility. What is your lower #...the diastole? That's a measure of the rigidity of your vessels AFAIK.

I suspect your doctor is right. But, low-fat, high fiber diets are what to do. Cut down the meats, unrefined carbs and sugars, and cut back the booze and ciggies if you use hem.

Start eating yogurt - plenty of tasty items - and they definitely help overall gut health. Avoid the lo-cal ones with aspartame sweetener.

Eat an apple per day, with the skin. Great fiber source. Eat oatmeal.

You will lower your worrying, if you take the time to figure out good nutrition. Study it. Pay attention to those labels on packaged food. And keep a log of what you eat.

Make sure you take a One-A-Day or Centrum vitamin.

Eat right...I'm sure you know what to do, or are going to learn.

And watch the booze and cigs. You are SOL if you use marijhauna or other stuff...

It's kinda hard to get one's fiber needs. I eat shredded wheat - the big biscuits without any sugar. They are loaded with fiber...but I'd have to eat 8 a day to get to the recommended 25 grams or so. biggrin.gif

It's mostly insoluble fiber, too. You need soluble fiber, also - like in oatmeal. The soluble fibers help remove cholesterol.

one-a-day type vitamins are good. But don't overdo it...many foods are already fortified - too much in my opinion.

Talk to a doctor. The two blood tests - CMP, complete metabolic profile, and a Lipid profile (total cholesterol, high and low density cholesterol, and triglycerides) may be recommended by him.

For the Lipid profile, you have to fast for a minimum of 12 hours; if you don't, the results are iffy at best. Don't chew gum or have any hard candy, too...messes up the triglyceride numbers.

And be sure to tell the Doctor about that residual pain...

Your arm hurts for days after they take a BP on you?? That's a bit unusual....

Keep in mind that 1) the mechanisms of blood pressure are not entirely understood, and 2) the new guidelines call for a "normal" pressure to be UNDER 120/80 now. There are people out there who eat right, exercise, sleep 8hrs/day, etc., but still have hypertension.

Your BP was probably more normal when you were drinking since alcohol promotes water loss. Well, technically it inhibits your body from holding on to it, which is the same end result as promoting the loss directly. You may want to see if your doctor suggests one of the 'over the counter' water pills (diuretics) for you. There have been studies where people who took those once a day were successful in lowering their BP to a more normal value.

The new target BP is 120/70.

You can be physically fit, have a great diet, no cigs/drinking and still have hypertension (high BP).

If you visit you MD and get 3 visits with increased BP, you will likely be prescribed a medication. The first line of defense is a diuretic which decreases volume in your blood stream, hence decreasing BP. If that is unsuccessful, he may prescribe a 2nd medication or even a 3rd (for extreme high BP, more than yours).

The things that lead to increased BP are poor diet, overweight, smoker, just plain old poor lifestyle, or it runs in the family. There are also other factors that may lead to hypertension such as renal issues which if gone unchecked can lead to severe problems down the road. If the medications don't work, it may be something else.

If you can adjust diet, physical activity and lower your BP, that's great. If not, it is very important to do whatever it takes to control it...even if it is medications.

Unchecked hypertension can lead to renal problems and heart failure. It can also cause vascular problems effecting you brain, kidneys, heart. In extreme cases of hypertension can even cause stroke.

I don't know the reason you don't want to take meds to control the high BP, but it may be advisable until you can control it with diet.

Good luck.
