I'm choosing my boy Halladay, who would probably already have a couple more wins if not for an inconsistent team behind him.

Also note that the poll includes probably everyone who might be on the ballot, and one who might not be eligible (Liriano), not just the top 3-5 faves.

You'll never guess who I voted for. biggrin.gif

Papelbon's numbers certainly are gaudy and merit a good look. Still, it's unusual for it to go to a closer, and I think there are several who have been as effective (if not quite as dominating -- nice ERA and K/BB) as Papelbon this year. I'll be interested to see how his career progresses. I stand by my selection, though. biggrin.gif

Mussina's been the most consistent pitcher in the AL this year.

A Cy Young would be a nice prize for what is now a borderline Hall of Fame career.

I didn't vote yet, I need to check the current stats, being a redsox fan I like paplebon, but stats is what will determine it for me, Halladay IS awesome.

Wang.

My take on Wang is, he's been great, but not the best. His Walks+Hits / IP (WHIP) are way higher than Halladay's and Santana's. And he doesn't have to face the best lineup in baseball regularly like Halladay does. Wang also has way more walks, and about half as many strikeouts as Halladay, who is not even a high-K guy any longer.

Both are smart pitchers who throw lots of groundballs. I'd still take Roy by a wide margin, though. Yanks are good, but they don't have the AL's best pitcher.

EDIT-- Look again: Kenny Rogers has stats comparable to Wang's. Does he deserve the Cy Young Award?

The Cy Young is for the best pitcher in the AL, not for the guy you like the best. Wang has about $150 million in bats backing him up...sure, he has been impressive, but IMHO, its a 2 horse race between Halladay and Santana right now. Nobody else in the AL can touch those guys.

Funny, isn't it? And not even any votes for Santana, while Moose, Mariano, and Wang have 4 between them. Some Yanks fans definitely have the blinders on.

I'd probably go
Halladay
Santana
Verlander

before I hit any Yanks, and it's not because I don't love their team. Those guys have honestly been the best in the game this year.

Except you don't reward a career. You reward a season. I take issue with the notion that Mussina's been the most consistent. Actually, look at Moose's stats. His ERA in June through August is well over 4.00 after a sterling first couple months. Halladay's worst was a shaky June where he went3.80.

Halladay's also gone deeper into his games generally. Again, Moose: very, very, good. Halladay or Santana: the best.
