Gibbons battles Lilly

Is this guy a terrible manager or what?

Regardless of whether or not Shea Hillenbrand is a disruptive influence on a team, Gibbons has now had his second public fight with a player, reportedly coming out of a tussle with Ted Lilly with a bloody nose.

First off, I'm not sure what kind of manager calls a game that results in blowing an 8-run lead and lets his team give up seven-run innings with regularity. Especially when the expectations are as high as they were supposed to be for the Jays. Then, to physically challenge your pitcher during a game? Fire this guy's ass. These guys should be doing way better with the talent they have. And if they don't have the pitching they need, they should go out and get it, instead of whining about the Yankees. Either way, it's simply hard to tell, given the guy doesn't have a clue on how to handle a pitching staff.

You don't have to go after your players to be a tough, no-nonsense manager.

Joe Torre doesn't do it.

Eric Wedge doesn't do it.

Joe Girardi doesn't do it.

Gibbons just seems to be looking for a fight. And it's really a shame, because the Blue Jays are on the cusp of the wildcard race. This ruins it for them.

You're dead-on, Mike.

It's a shame for a lot of reasons and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the reason they're pretty much out of both races. If Vernon Wells doesn't want to stay, I don't blame him -- which sucks. And especially as long as Gibbons is at the helm, I see it getting very difficult to pick up quality pitching in the 3-4-5 slots (though Chacin will get one of those upon his return and next year).

I just shot three Blue Jays in my back yard. BB gun. Damn those birds cry a lot before that last one to the head.
