ok, what gives with the mlb all star game? Shouldn't the teams be in "american" and "national" uniforms instead of their normal teams? This is just ridiculous... One reason why i don't watch baseball till the playoffs...

Really? Jeez, I think this is great tradition. The players are there representing their teams, why not wear the jerseys? Isn't there something semi-cool about seeing Jeter in his Yanks gear high-fiving Ortiz in his Boston uni?
I remember as a young lad watching a mid-80s All Star game, and the Tigers' Lou Whittaker lost his luggage or had his gear stolen (I can't remember which) before the game. He had to go to a sporting goods store and purchase a generic Detroit uniform, and the equipment manager hastily drew Lou's #1 on the jersey. If I remember correctly, he was wearing mismatched pants, socks, etc. Quirky stories like that don't happen if he just shows up to the park and slaps on an over-designed, trendy, "American League" jersey.
EDIT: I found the story...I guess he forgot it!

In 1985, Tigers second baseman Lou Whitaker inexplicably forgot to pack his equipment. "I left everything in my Mercedes in the back seat — my cap, my glove, my hat," Whitaker lamented. A skin-tight replica Tigers jersey was found and his number "1" was written in black marker on the back. Wearing blue stirrup socks borrowed from the Twins and a glove on loan from Cal Ripken, Whitaker played, going 0 for 2. "The fans aren't looking at your uniform, they're looking at the way you play," Whitaker said.
