I am thinking about taking up golf this summer. I have only been a couple of times, so I don’t want to spend too much on a set of clubs (just in case don’t like it). I start group lessons in a couple of weeks, so I have some time to find the right set of clubs. Any suggestions on where I can get a good set that I will use for a couple of years that won’t break the bank (under $200)? I looked at Dicks and Sport Authority, but don’t really know what I am looking at. One sales person what trying to sell me a set of Tour Collection clubs (HRX4) that are on sale for $179.99, is this a good deal?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Just Jack
I got my set at Play It Again Sports. It was a new set and bag, I think I paid somewhere around $150, this was about 10 years ago. I don't golf regularly so I didn't need the best of the best clubs.

I agree with the second hand approach for those getting started. Why spend the bucks for full retail if you don't play a lot or don't know if you are going to stay with the game.

Look for "game improvement" clubs = cavity back, perimeter weighted, or similar. DO NOT go to pro blades when starting out.

Spend the extra $$ on some lessons.

My girlfriend is a PGA apprentice at one of the more elite country clubs here in Cincinnati - she also played collegiately at Purdue and Cincinnati. Ironically, I don't play at all.

By all means take up golf. Even if you hate it you can say you tried it. i'ved played for about 15 years now and have worked on my local golf course for 5 years now. Any questions or concerns ask...

I wouldn't buy a set of clubs from Play it again sports. They sell nothing but used junk. You can get a decent starter set for under 200.00 at Walmart and it's NEW! I bought my first putter at Play it Again, and used it 10 years. Starter sets don't come with putters. Usually a 1 3 and 5 wood and 3-9 irons. wink.gif

The Play It Again I went to had new sets in stock also. My set I picked up was the bag, 1,3,5 wood, and 3,5,7,9 irons. The putter I already had from taking up golf back when I was 14.

I bought an Odyssey putter for my bag last year. I'd give away all my clubs, but NEVER NEVER NEVER my putter. I love it death, and it has brought my putting to nnew heights. Sometimes when you get a new club of any sort you kick butt with it for a few weeks, but then you come to earth and the club fails you. My putter has been true to me since day one, and I'm super confident with it.. tongue.gif

I wouldn't say a starter set for under 200.00 is an unreasonable investment. That's why I suggestyed the Walmart idea. Any thing new in a Play it again Sports place will be just a sufficient as the sets they carry at Walmart. If you go to higher end clubs..yes you pay more, but that should be considered once your game improves or you're going to commit to the game. The Playing it again place where I live doesn't carry great club sets. My first set was a Northwestern golf set for 179.00 at walmart. Played with them for many years before i invested dollars into my PING drivers and irons.

Play quite a bit of golf myself, just getting wife into game - got her the HRX4 (Ladies) clubs yesterday at Sports Athority - went to driving range - I tried them and they hit fine... Watch your setup/approach the first couple times with the Hybreds (4 and 5 in ladies) looked different at the tee - pushed way right for me.

Rest of bag worked well for me albeit more flex and shorter shafts than my Calaways

Bought a complete set of Nickalus signature series clubs at Costco for about $230. Comes with a sweet bag, driver, three wood, 3, and 4 hybrids, irons 5-SW, and a putter with a cover. The two woods and hybrids come with graphite shafts. I love em...
