SAN DIEGO (AP) - All-star catcher Mike Piazza agreed Sunday to a $2-million US, one-year free agent contract with the San Diego Padres, giving the defending NL West champions a marquee player they think can still contribute.

Can anyone explain to me why a player who can't play the field wouldn't look to the American League?

did you see his option for next year? 8 million. Mike is a first ballot HOF, but no one is going to be paying 8 mill for him at this stage.

It makes sense. With the departure of Ramon Hernandez to Baltimore, this gives the Padres some leverage this season.
