Free up some money? Like there's a salary cap in baseball? 
No AOL owns the Braves, AOL has a self imposed cap of 80 million. By doing this it allows the Braves to get some players b/c of their self imposed cap.

They need someone like him to stabalize the bullpen. Farnsworth could still be the closer, (he did a good job last season for the Braves in that role) and Hoffman could be the setup man
